Long before it became a style, the Gothic was a way of seeing the world. It grew out of cathedral stone and churchyard soil, out of village folklore, sermons and superstition — out of the stories people told about the dead who would not rest.
Novelists gave those fears a shape. The Victorians gave them a ritual. What we call Gothic today is the echo of centuries of history, religion, literature and fear — far older, and far stranger, than the costume suggests.
